ATLANTA, GA – A truck driver was charged under the new GA cargo theft statute after SETSC President Bob Hastings had the opportunity to inform a detective about the new cargo theft statutes. Allegedly, the truck driver sold 2 high-value loads for drugs and prostitutes. The detective stated he never knew there was a special statute for cargo theft and had previously planned to charge the driver with receiving stolen property. Under the new law, offenders can receive up to 30 years in prison and fines of $1 million. The victory belongs to both law enforcement and corporate investigators because they partnered up to solve the case together. All parties should be recognized for working together and solving the case.
You can read the full statute here: GA Cargo Theft Statute. SETSC asks its members to share news of this new statute with law enforcement officers. Offenders charged under O.C.G.A. § 16-8-22 (2015) face stiffer penalties than they would under other property theft statutes.
